Policies
Advertising policy
Effective date: 3 April 2025. This site sells nothing — no books, no subscriptions, no tickets. To help cover the modest cost of keeping it online, some pages may display advertising served by Microsoft Advertising. This policy explains plainly how that works and how to opt out.
How ad serving works on this site
When a page carrying an ad placement loads, your browser contacts Microsoft's advertising servers — the platform behind ads on Bing and its partner network — which select and deliver an advertisement. We do not choose the individual ads, and we do not endorse the products or services shown. Advertising space is always visually separated from editorial content; nothing in the journal, the book pages or the biography is paid placement, and we accept no sponsored posts, advertorials or paid links of any kind.
Microsoft's use of cookies and data
To serve and measure ads, Microsoft Advertising and its partners may set or read cookies and similar technologies on your device, and may process information about your visit — including your IP address, device and browser characteristics, and how you interact with an ad. That processing is governed by Microsoft's own policies, not ours: see the Microsoft Advertising policies and the Microsoft Privacy Statement. We do not receive personal data from Microsoft about individual visitors.
Personalized versus non-personalized ads
Where your settings and applicable law permit, ads may be personalized — selected using an advertising profile built from your activity across sites and services that work with Microsoft. Where personalization is switched off, declined, or not permitted, ads are non-personalized: they are chosen from the content of the page you are reading and your general location (for example, the state your connection appears to be in) rather than from a profile of you. Non-personalized ads still require cookies for basic functions such as counting views and limiting how often the same ad appears.
Your choice in this site's cookie banner governs whether advertising cookies are set by us on Microsoft's behalf; Microsoft's own settings, described below, govern the profile Microsoft itself keeps.
How to opt out
You have several independent routes, and each can be used on its own or together with the others:
- Microsoft ad personalization settings. Sign in to your Microsoft account's privacy dashboard, or use the ad personalization control linked from the Microsoft Privacy Statement, to switch personalized advertising off. With personalization off you will still see ads, but they will not be based on a profile of you.
- Digital Advertising Alliance opt-out. Visit optout.aboutads.info to opt out of interest-based advertising from Microsoft and dozens of other participating companies at once.
- Network Advertising Initiative opt-out. Visit optout.networkadvertising.org for a second industry-wide opt-out covering NAI member companies.
- This site's cookie banner. Use the "Cookie settings" link in the footer of any page to withdraw consent on this site specifically.
- Your browser. Blocking third-party cookies in your browser settings prevents most advertising cookies from being set at all.
Industry opt-outs work by placing an opt-out cookie on your device; if you clear your cookies you will need to set them again.
