Policies
Cookie policy
Effective date: 3 April 2025. This policy explains what cookies are, which ones booksbydaphnelenben.com uses, and how you can control them.
What cookies are
A cookie is a small text file that a website asks your browser to store on your device. Cookies let a site remember things between pages and between visits — a language choice, a login, a consent decision. A related technology, browser local storage, keeps similar information without an expiry date until it is cleared. Cookies can be "first-party" (set by the site you are visiting) or "third-party" (set by another service whose content appears on the page, such as an embedded map or an advertisement).
Cookies used on this site
This site is deliberately light on cookies. The categories below describe everything that may be set when you browse here.
| Category | Purpose | Duration |
|---|---|---|
| Strictly necessary | Records the choice you make in the cookie consent banner (stored in your browser's local storage under the key bdlb-cookie-consent) so the banner is not shown again. The site cannot function as designed without this record. | Until cleared from your browser, or until you use the "Cookie settings" link to reset it |
| Preferences | May remember presentation choices such as your place in the journal archive between visits. This site currently sets no first-party preference cookies beyond the consent record above. | Up to 12 months where used |
| Analytics | Help us understand, in aggregate, which essays and pages are read so the journal can serve its readers better. Any analytics cookies are set only after you press "Accept" in the consent banner. | Up to 13 months |
| Advertising | Set by Microsoft Advertising and its partners where ads are shown on this site, to serve, measure and (where permitted) personalize advertising, and by Google where the embedded map on the contact page loads. These are third-party cookies governed by those companies' own policies. | Typically up to 13 months, set by the third party |
How the consent banner works
On your first visit, a banner appears at the foot of the page explaining that cookies are in use. It offers two buttons — "Accept" and "Decline" — and a link to this policy. Your choice is written to your browser's local storage under a key specific to this site, and the banner never appears again while that record exists. Pressing "Decline" records your refusal; non-essential cookies are not set on the basis of silence.
How to withdraw consent
Every page of this site carries a "Cookie settings" link in the footer. Selecting it deletes the stored consent record and immediately re-shows the banner, so you can make a fresh choice at any time. You can also clear the record yourself by clearing your browser's site data for booksbydaphnelenben.com.
Browser-level cookie controls
Every modern browser lets you view, block or delete cookies, either for all sites or for individual ones. The controls live in the privacy or site-settings section of your browser: in Microsoft Edge under "Cookies and site permissions", in Chrome under "Privacy and security", in Firefox under "Cookies and Site Data", and in Safari under "Privacy". Blocking strictly necessary storage may cause the consent banner to reappear on each visit; the rest of the site will still read perfectly well.
